viral and bacterial infections
I have a wonderful story that was in the historical section of my pharmacology text book. It was about Louis Pasteur and his initial experiments after his discovery of the microbe. At that time in history it was anthrax that was the most feared disease, so Pasteur decided to do an experiment using 2 beakers of human urine. One sample he sterilized and the other he left with common bacteria. Today we would call these bacteria probiotics or beneficial bacteria. When he inoculated both samples of urine with anthrax, it flourished in the sterilized urine and did not grow in the beaker of urine with common bacteria. They prevented the anthrax from growing. The population of beneficial bacteria acted as an environmental antibiotic not allowing the anthrax to implant itself and grow and spread.
