Improving my digestion

If I wanted to improve my digestion where would I start. Firstly we would look at the quality and freshness of the food and whether is was prepared with spices that support the digestive organs. What are we putting into our body? Then we would look at the receiver. the mind body or the person ingesting the food. Is the environment settled and calm when we are eating our meal. Are our meal time in tune with the rhythms of the day.  In Ayurved the digestive process is at its strongest at midday when the sun is highest in the sky. So we start our day off with a lighter meal of stewed fruit and cooked cereal. Just as when we are lighting a camp fire we start with little sticks and get the fire going then we put on the big logs. Similarly we start with light "break-fast" breaking our fast and then our midday meal would contain more substantial food that is harder to digest.  We would also include some fermented food to add beneficial bacteria by having a "lassi" which is...

GERD - Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Today I am posting my response to a letter I received from a grateful client. She attended a presentation on Shaka Vansya Ayurved last October in Sechlet and acted upon a suggestion I made.  Dear Friends of Shaka Vansya Ayurved, I would like to report one success from the “Smart Water” recipe that I sent to everyone.  It was someone who suffered for 5-6 years with GERD - Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disorder. This is a disease of the digestive tract where the acid in the stomach does not continue on its path to the intestine and get neutralized but instead comes back up the esophagus.  Sometimes we call it “heart burn” and in severe cases it can start to burn the lining of the esophagus or more. The usual treatment is with drugs called PPI’s or Proton Pump Inhibitors which work on the stomach to reduce the production of acid. Here is her story of gratitude.  *************************************************************************************************** ...

Apple Raisin Chutney

On Sept 12, 2015 a group of enthusiastic Yoga practitioners gathering in the forested amphitheatre at Porpoise Bay provincial park.  The sun was glistening through the trees and just 200 feet down the trail there was a mother bear and her cubs feeding on the salmon that had come to spawn. The gathering was to learn more about Shaka Vansya Ayurved. Elizabeth Innes was the speaker. Yes it was a gorgeous sunny afternoon in the forest. A perfect place to learn more about Prana moving into our body and how to balance body/minds for more vitality and health. We started with the basic principle of Space/Ether, Solar, and Lunar energies and how they become Vata, Pitta, Kapha in our physical forms.  How the doshas of V,P and K shift and change every 4 hours in the circadian cycle of the day. After breaking up into groups and doing a questionnaire to get a glimpse into our body type we then went on to examine what foods and spices are best to balance the doshas. Not only in Shaka ...

Purity of Knowledge

The power of the media is great. I found that out a few weeks ago when the article I submitted to our local community paper published my 200 word article. Not only that they also put my picture on the front page - the whole page.  60 People showed up for my talk. Only a hand full had heard of Ayurved in the past and most of them were seeking help for various health issues. The next days I also hit Facebook with people commenting on my talk. I was surprised that they did not really hear what I said and posted recipes from other teachers and connected them to me. Wow! misquoted on my first step into public view. Correction were made at my request. I did not want to be responsible for bringing misunderstanding into Shaka Vansya Ayurved. We know that Ayurved is an ancient knowledge and I am blessed to have a teacher, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra, who can trace his lineage back thousands of years and also teachers from the ancient Vedic texts. He calls his approach "Sutra to Science...

headaches

When I am working at the drugstore in my capacity as a community pharmacist one of the common complaints that presents itself is people coming in to buy Tylenol ( acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen) or Aleve (naproxen) for headaches. Of course there is also Tylenol #1 which is a mixture of acetaminophen, caffeine and codeine. I am always amazed when the same people come on a regular basis and buy upto 200 tablets.  I always say "Before taking a tablet for your headache be sure you drink 2 -8 oz cups of water and then wait 10 minutes."  It has been my personal experience that when I wake up with a headache, I am often dehydrated. I drink 2-3 cups of water which often induces a bowel movement and 99% of the time the headache is gone. So before reaching for the tablet for pain be sure you drink that water. Also you might consider adding "Smart Water" to your daily routine. The herbs help to carry the water into the cellular systems. This is important because often th...

Understanding fevers as protective mechanism

Shaka Vansya Ayurved teaches that there is a flow or cascade of tissue development.  And that the most superficial tissues are the easiest to "cleanse" of toxins. When we nourish our bodies and minds the food we ingest is processed by the liver to make intelligent blood or plasma that then is carried to various parts of our physiology.  The plasma or white blood cells have two component or layers. One stays as plasma and the other is converted to the next layer or depth of tissue which are the red blood cells. And so the cascade continues.  The red blood cells then form muscle tissue which form fat tissue, then bone, bone marrow, reproductive tissue and finally Ojas the "liquid light" that gives us vitality and that healthy glow.  Below you will see the cascade. Rasa ( white blood cells or plasma)            Rakta (red blood cells - RBC)                          Mamsa...

pain from hot food

Recently a friend called about not being able to eat anything hot as it caused extreme radiating pain in the face and jaw. This person had a pure (sattvic) life style and was very conscious about choices he made for his health.  So the question was what could be the source of the problem. We chatted a bit and started talking about various Ayurvedic protocols for the head and face.  The conversation got around to "pulling" which is a procedure where one hold oil in the mouth first thing in the morning to pull toxins out - the oil is then spit out.  He had decided the Coconut oil was good. It seems everyone is talking about the benefits of Coconut oil these days.  As we continued to discuss the situation the thought came that possibly Coconut oil might not be the best choice as it tend to be clogging of channels - both physical and vibrational.  Possibly this was contributing to the blocking of pranic flow in the mouth and jaw and causing pain. Hmmm. Well what i...
