The liver and toxins
Modern day chemicals are everywhere. They get into our food and water as herbicides and pesticides. They are applied to our skin as cosmetics. Even most of the toothpaste and shampoo that you buy at the drug store has Sodium lauryl sulfate in it whose safety is questionable. Everything that is taken orally and passes from our mouth to the stomach and then the intestines is transferred from the intestinal tract by a bed of capillaries to the portal vein and then the liver. The liver is the only organ that has two veins entering. One vein from the general circulation and the other from the digestive tract. The portal vein from the digestive tract is know as "First Pass Metabolism". All the plasma coming the liver via the portal vein is then "metabolized" by the liver into intelligent blood that is then sent into the general metabolism.
