Exercise

A morning walk is great for Kapha type disorders whether they be diabetes or depression. The morning air revitalizes and gets the circulation going. Also excellent is the yoga serious called "Sun Salutation" go to you-tube and get a sense of it and then find a qualified instructor to teach you how to do it properly. Most yoga studios would have someone who would do that. I have my preferences as to yoga methods but you will have to search out one that works for you.

Diabetes - kapha diet

In his book, "The complete book of Ayurvedic home remedies" Dr Vasant Lad recommends a Kapha pacifying diet and certain herbs for diabetes. Lets talk about the diet. Also the principles behind Vata Pitta Kapha and the 5 elements. Just as in Chinese medicine Ayurved sees our connection to nature through the 5 elements of Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Vata being Space and air and therefore movement, Pitta being fire and water and therefore transformation and Kapha being water and earth and therefore structure. Therefore from this perspective diabetes is lack of transformative energy and excess of structural or earthy and watery energy. How do we bring back the balance? The recommendations that come from Ayurved would blend very nicely with what you would here from your Diabetic Educator. By the way, if you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes this is a resource that your must find and use. These are highly trained nurses that specialize in education. So a simple recom

Type 2 Diabetes

A few people have been asking me about what Ayurved would recommend to prevent or reverse Type 2 Diabetes. First let us understand diabetes from the biological perspective of Western medicine. Due to excess consumption of refined sugars and carbohydrate the pancreas produces less insulin and also the cell walls have become less receptive to insulin or have developed and insulin resistance. There are drugs that will stimulate the pancreas and also to reduce the insulin resistance of the cells. When this occurs the sugars do not pass through the cell walls and do not get into the cell where they would normally be used as energy. Then the sugar stays in the blood and is excreted via the kidneys. Thus the elevated blood sugar. Ayurved sees Diabetes as a Kapha type disorder in which the diminished digestive fire lead to a tendency of high blood sugar. They would then recommend a Kapha pacifying diet. Avoiding excess sugars, carbohydrates and diary products. Encouraging fresh vegetables
I just had a friend call and say that she was recovering from surgery and that the bruising was major and that the healing was progressing more slowly than she expected. The following recommendation is not from any Ayurvedic source but from life experience of my mother and one of her older friends who was a wonderful healer. I have tested this on myself with bruises and it works like a charm. You take Comfrey Root and Aloe Vera leaves and blend them together. If you are fortunate enough to have a Comfrey plant in you back yard and an Aloe plant in your kitchen - you are all set. However if not - you can find Comfrey Root dehydrated in health food stores or Whole Foods - you have to use the root as apposed to the leaves because it is more mucilaginous whereas the leaves have those little prickly things that can irritate the skin. Once you have a good supply of either dry powder Comfrey Root or fresh root chopped up, you can then blend it with the Aloe Vera leaf. Once you have a mushy mi

colon heath

The colon plays a most important role in maintaining our health. It is one of the most intelligent organs in the body. The walls of the colon re-absorb water and necessary items and eliminate those that are not needed. Therefore the colon is not just a simple rubber hose - it is constantly working to maintain optimal body function. We know it is not happy when either we are constipated or we have diarrhea. Ir even worse we get cramping and pain. It is calling for help. Some of the simple things that we can do to keep the colon happy are: 1. provide it with good quality beneficial bacteria. and 2. Make sure we have enough hydration so that it has enough water to do its work. 3. eat plenty of fruits and veggies so that there is enough fibre 4. Go for a walk so that the movement can help maintain the peristaltic action of the colon. So therefore water, exercise, fibre and good bacteria all work together to create good bowel function. Also I have found one mineral that is very helpfu

winter routine

Someone called me today to say that they wanted to do a cleanse. You can read some of the early posting about cleanses. However just to review. The best time to move toxins out of the body is in the spring and fall. Winter is the least ideal time to detox or cleanse to body of toxins. During the winter months every things is shrinking and preserving - the nadis or bioelectrical channels as well at the shrotos or physical channels. During the winter we want to nourish and rest. However that said we can maintain the body in a well hydrated stated. One simple recommendation is Vaidya Mishra's herbal tea. This magical formula has a profound effect on the mind/body. Remember - boil 1 to 2 liters of good spring water and add 1/2 to 1 tsp of Corainder seed, fennel seed, a pinch of marshmellow root and 2 fresh mint leaves or a bag of mint tea. This is a mild tasting tea and supports many of the internal organs. And most importantly the marshmellow root protects the lining of the chan

Turmeric Power

I am still smiling. I just got off You Tube where several doctors were singing high praises of Turmeric. They were talking about its wonderful benefits and all the research on its anti-inflammatory properties, anti-oxidant benefits ( 8 times better than Vitamin C and Vitamin E) and how people who use it regularly have less breast and prostate cancer etc etc. One doctor was particularly funny as he kept calling the active ingredient of Turmeric - cumin - when in fact it is curcumin. All these "experts" on turmeric sounded so believable and I am sure there are many people out there that will start using turmeric and its active ingredient curcumin as they recommend. Dr. Joseph Mercola even suggests that it should be taken raw which is not recommended in Ayurvedic texts. But I will refer you to a true expert on Turmeric and that is Surya Kant who is the son of Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra and the next in line to carry the family knowledge of Shaka Vansya Ayurved. Surya is currently

Fall Cleanse

The change of the season is upon us. The mind/body is preparing for the shift in the laws of nature. Panchakarma is often recommended at this time. However for most of us - the ability to go to a spa/clinic for 2 weeks of Panchakarma is not always possible. Here is the alternative "Home Panchakarma" This method was developed from the Shakya Vansya Ayurved system as taught by Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra. Just as a review - AMA - is undigested food that clogs the channels - that is the white gooey stuff at the back of your tongue that needs to be scraped off in the morning. There is also AMA Visha that is old Ama that is hot and more virulent. These are the commonly known toxins of the ancient ayurvedic texts. Now in the modern day world we are bombarded by hundreds if not thousands of chemicals - these are known as Garvisha in SVA ( Shakya Vansya Ayurved) and the fourth toxic group is the EMF's - Electro-Magnetic Frequencies. They enter the body interfering with pranic flow
This blog is devoted to Ayurved - Ayu - life, Ved - knowledge. If looking at the ancient texts of Charak the definition is Ayurved is very broad so it is with desire to help and serve our world family that I would like to introduce you to the Buteyko Method. Dr. Buteyko was a russian scientist ( actually I think Buteyko is a Ukrainian name) who did a lot of work on breathing disorders. Everything from asthma to sleep apnea and even hypertension are all connected to the ratio of CO2 and O2 in the blood. The hemoglobin molecule that carries O2 to every cell in our body is very intelligent and will only release the O2 if there is a certain amount of CO2 in the blood. That is that basic principle of Buteyko Method. Optimizing the ratio of CO2 and O2. Many people over breath or hyperventilate and the CO2 levels drops and the oxygen is not released. The then are deprived of the life giving effects of the very breath of life. Through educating the person in special breathing techniques and

cholesterol

Elevated cholesterol is a common concern of many. The allopathic answer is "statin" drugs with their many toxic side effects. However there is be a different way to look at elevated cholesterol. Cholesterol is a four ringed organic compound that is converted in the liver to testosterone and as we age and our liver gets sluggish the cholesterol no longer get converted efficiently into necessary by-products. So there is a back-up and cholesterol levels go up. So really it is a digestive disorder. What needs to be addressed is diet but not in the conventional sense of eliminating food that are high in cholesterol but look at which food would encourage the body to process our food to good product. What food or medicinal culinary spices would encourage the liver to work as nature intended. All the food we eat or drugs we take are first passed via the portal vein through the liver. The liver then detoxes the unnecessary toxins and take the good food that we eat and turns it into in

visualization and energy healing

There is a young man "Adam the Dreamhealer" who found at a very young age that he could heal others with intention and channeling energy into the person. There are many people out there now who have special gifts and can heal others with touch or intention. What is unique about Adam is first of all his young age and also that he quickly realized that he could not heal everyone and proceeded to teach people how to heal themselves. If you attend one of his workshop he teaches you how to visualize energy coming into an area that is needing attention. How do we know something is amiss in our body. We feel pain in that area. That is the way our body says, "I am talking to you. Please pay attention." Now "attention" is an interesting word. Lets break it down. "Ah-tension" So when there is tension somewhere in the body, it needs to say "Ah" and expand. Somehow the area has contracted and created tension in that area. Either due to emotion
