Protecting the liver.

The liver, a large organ on the right side of our body under the rib cage has a big task to perform.  Everything that we take in through our mouth passes through the portal vein to the liver where major transformation takes place.  All the "dumb food" we eat has to be transformed into intelligent blood.  What do I mean by "Dumb Food"?  It is food that has lost its life force. Food that has been poisoned by being grown with herbicides and pesticides.  Food that has been cooked, then frozen and then reheated in a microwave.  Food that has been cooked and then kept in the fridge for days and then reheated.  The best most vital food to nourish our body is the food that is freshly prepared and eaten within 4 hours.  Impossible you say!  Not really. It takes planning and determination. Look ahead for 1 week.

Breakfast can be simple and light and easy to digest.  Highly recommended is stewed apples of pears with 3-4 cloves.  These cooked fruits have malic acid in them which is very helpful to maintain a healthy liver.  This is how you would "break your fast" in the morning. Eating this on an empty stomach with ignite your digestive fire and cleanse the liver.  Also a tea of coriander, fennel and mint would be a good start.  Then when you get hungry a cooked grain like oat or barley flakes.  Barley flakes are particularly good as they have mucilage in the that binds toxins.

Lunch is our biggest meal because midday when the sun is highest in the sky is when our digestion is strongest.  A hearty meal of protein, veggies and grains with all six tastes - sweet sour salty pungent bitter and astringent.  Traditional indian spices have been added to cooking food to enhance these tastes in the food.  For example a meal of rice, which is considered to be sweet ( also chicken is considered to be sweet) with a pinch of salt; then lentils (which are astringent) cooked with a 1/8 of a teaspoonful of turmeric (which is bitter); then green veggies which are often bitter with some cumin/coriander/fennel/turmeric and then a squeeze of lime juice for the sour taste.  You could also make a yogurt drink for the sour taste. 1/3 yogurt to 2/3 water with a pinch of cumin to help digestion.

Mid afternoon if your energy failing you have a fruit.  It is important to eat fruit away from you big meals as they digest very quickly and best eaten alone - wait one hour and then have other food.

The evening meal needs to be lighter as the digestion is now slower. So possibly a soup or some quinoa with veggies.

For those of you who inspired to follow an Shaka Vansiya protocol for diet you might consider going to the website of Dr. Marianne Teitelbaum and listening to her free lectures.  She covers a lot of the basics in those talks that she has prepared for her patients and has made available for all for free.
