Turmeric Power

I am still smiling. I just got off You Tube where several doctors were singing high praises of Turmeric. They were talking about its wonderful benefits and all the research on its anti-inflammatory properties, anti-oxidant benefits ( 8 times better than Vitamin C and Vitamin E) and how people who use it regularly have less breast and prostate cancer etc etc.

One doctor was particularly funny as he kept calling the active ingredient of Turmeric - cumin - when in fact it is curcumin. All these "experts" on turmeric sounded so believable and I am sure there are many people out there that will start using turmeric and its active ingredient curcumin as they recommend. Dr. Joseph Mercola even suggests that it should be taken raw which is not recommended in Ayurvedic texts.

But I will refer you to a true expert on Turmeric and that is Surya Kant who is the son of Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra and the next in line to carry the family knowledge of Shaka Vansya Ayurved. Surya is currently in medical school but in 2003 as a mere teenage boy, Surya wrote a book on Turmeric - "Turmeric - Super Spice for Optimum Health". Its ISBN number is 0-9741639-0-2
In 2003 there were already 300 scientific articles published on Turmeric in the last 20 years - there have to be 100's more now and the evidence is conclusive that this is a miracle drugs. Yes the pharmaceutical companies have tried to get the FDA to allow them to patent it but luckily the FDA did not budge and Turmeric is still in the "spice" category. On the cover of Surya's book there is a bullet....Used for medical purposes from the common cold to DNA repair.

The important information that I would transmit in this short posting is that for those in the west who do not use Turmeric on a regular basis it is important that we start slow and increase gradually. The best way is to make a spice mix blend - 1 part Turmeric, 1 part cumin, 6 parts Coriander and your can also add 6 parts Fennel - but I would caution you that Fennel is Estrogenic and is you are told by your physician to not use any estrogen then you might want to eliminate the fennel of just add pinch to the mix. Another word of caution - do not buy Turmeric from an Indian grocer as that turmeric is not organic and is usually mixed with clay to reduce it bitterness and stretch it for cost purposes. I usually purchase my Organic Turmeric from Frontier Herbals.

I would encourage you to go to your library and request Surya Kants book "Turmeric - Super Spice for optimum health.
