viral and bacterial infections

I have a wonderful story that was in the historical section of my pharmacology text book. It was about Louis Pasteur and his initial experiments after his discovery of the microbe. At that time in history it was anthrax that was the most feared disease, so Pasteur decided to do an experiment using 2 beakers of human urine. One sample he sterilized and the other he left with common bacteria. Today we would call these bacteria probiotics or beneficial bacteria. When he inoculated both samples of urine with anthrax, it flourished in the sterilized urine and did not grow in the beaker of urine with common bacteria. They prevented the anthrax from growing. The population of beneficial bacteria acted as an environmental antibiotic not allowing the anthrax to implant itself and grow and spread.

Therefore the best way to prevent infections is to maintain an environment of friendly bacteria. Ayurved recommends freshly made yogurt, made daily overnight, not refrigerated and eaten the next day. Diluted to make a lassi - 1/3 yogurt or 1/2 and the rest water with a pinch of cumin and salt.

It is also important to maintain a good routine or rest, going to bed on time so that our bodies can get restoritive rest. Ayurved recommends being in bed at 9 PM or at the latest 10 PM. The hours before midnight are most important to be in deep sleep. We eat freshly cooked food that is appropriate for the season and our body/mind. We maintain nurturing relationships and our spiritual practice.

Herbal antibiotics are much better than pharmaceutical antibiotics as the bacteria respond to them and do not form resistant to an antibiotic from a plant. The diversity of the plant is complex.

It has been scientifically documented that the quality of water, food, housing and community has a great effect on preventing bacterial and viral infections.
