Inflammation: acute and chronic

We will start by dividing the term INFLAMMATION into to types -  ACUTE which is the bodies’ protective mechanism to invaders or injury lasting for days and CHRONIC which is no longer protective to the body but has become dysfunctional and last for months and years.  It  has become a “DISEASE state’ . Chronic inflammation in allopathy is something to be managed and not considered reversible. Diseases like hay-fever, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflamed gums, asthma, etc.  However now with the great advances in modern science it seems that many researchers are saying that almost all disease processes have an underlying inflammatory component.

However SVA looks at the disease process as progressive. Starting with simple imbalances in the DOSHAS which can create vague symptoms which are not easily diagnosed but can be perceived by a skilled pulse diagnostician.  These imbalances can be corrected by diet lifestyle and herbs.  The progression can be divided into 6 stages and it is not until stage 5 and 6 that the imbalance can be “capped” or named as a disease.  This understanding then also allows for the reversal of these imbalances.

Now that we have established that acute or initial inflammation is really a protective mechanism to invaders or injury. I would like to stretch that understanding to the fact that there are many unseen or not understood invaders in our environment.  Let’s call them “toxins”. These are all the chemicals that are constantly being manufactured by the industrial world.  Some spewed into the atmosphere which we breathe and others applied to our skin or sprayed onto our food and soil.  The list is endless. SVA calls these GARAVISHA.  “GARA”  meaning slow and “VISHA” meaning poison.

My theory (and I am still looking for more supportive evidence) is that it is these GARAVISHA or slow poisons that are the underlying cause of chronic inflammation. They slowly enter our body, creeping in silently without our being aware or feeling anything. They enter when we inhale toxic fumes; apply chemical cosmetics and lotions to our skin; any synthetic chemical products that is foreign to the natural intelligence of our body/mind

The molecular size of most modern synthetic chemicals are too small and foreign for the immune system to recognize and eliminate. However they penetrate to the micro-cellular level sitting around for a long time causing long term damage and eventually show up as a chronic ailment.

According to Vaidya RK Mishra: “These slow poisons were recognized in ancient times, the ayurvedic healers coined this term to refer specifically to slow poisons external to the body, such as those carried by some animals and insects. SVA extends the original definition of garavisha from the ayurvedic shastras or texts to encompass our modern concept of xenobiotics - from xenos (Greek for foreign) and bio (living organism). Garavisha, as Vaidya Mishra explains, can help us deal with the modern phenomenon of xenobiotic toxicity or chemical compounds that are not produced by our own bodies, and thus externally acquired……Garavisha is thus an exogenous toxin, a poisonous substance that enters our body from outside. For example: drugs (medicinal or recreational); environmental compounds or pollutants such as synthetic pesticides, herbicides; industrial pollutants and preservatives that are nowadays commonly used in personal care products such as SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulfate as a foaming agent); Parabens (a preservative); synthetic scents, flavours, and colouring agents; etc. All these are not found in nature, but are rather lab manufactured and derived.

This differentiation between AMA - or undigested food, Amavisha acidic old AMA and Garavisha is not commonly understood in Ayurvedic circles. Its takes a great sage, from a long lineage that was personally mentored by his father and grandfather to be able to see into the ancient text and apply them to modern day challenges facing our human family.

Vaidya Mishra was a great formulator and he created a herbal blend to eliminate these modern day chemicals from our physiology. He call it Garavisha Tea.  This blend of herbs will eliminate the toxic micro-molecules. They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Here is the link to purchase the “ounce of prevention”.
